Anyone one of any age of any sex can play!
Obviously you'll need to understand the game to get any sort of enjoyment out of it.
It's basically a big bunch of nerds! But very fun indeed!

It's fun and for the price, you will have a nice time. Depending on where you play FNM, it's mostly about how many people show up. They range from teens to mid fifties (possibly older, but not where I am). The people are friendly and sometimes when you make play errors (things maybe you should have done during your turn, but you didn't for some reason), they like to point out the strategies they see to improve your playing of your deck. So they are helpful, especially if they win.
Mostly, you will see a lot of winning top 8 decks being played (people like to win tournaments) and a few rogue decks that people are experimenting with.
Hope this helps. Go have fun.

At the MTG tournaments I go to, there are usually 15 to 30 people there, the youngest is about 12 and the oldest is about 40. Most of them are in college. They are usually male, though sometimes they bring their girlfriends along. There's a front section where they sell cards, deck boxes, sleeves, novels, miniatures, board games, etc., then there's the main room where they play Magic and Warhammer, then there's a game room in the back where people pay to play computer games. There are two people who always manage the games, and they are often rude and nasty to the players (not seriously though), but no one really cares because everyone knows each other.
