Alpha Cards also have a rounder edge so that they are different then beta. Try holding the cards in question to a magic card from today if they match it's beta if not its alpha. As soon as you enter the site, click on the "Gatherer" option right under the search window and you'll see a popup window that will allow you to enter a name and search the matching card there. Now, if it IS black, then the really only way to find out if it's Beta or Alpha is to really look at the card, there are VERY small differences depending on the cards. Such as Lightning Bolt, the Alpha Version was darker than the Beta version. Different cards have different things about them between Beta and Alpha. Best thing is to take to an expert in a big city that you can trust, and get multiple opinions.
